Adaptive Fitness in Neurological Populations for Sustainable Health and Wellness

PRESENTER: Joshua Sepic, MS, ACSM-CEP; Shirley Ryan Ability Lab, Chicago, IL

BRIEF SUMMARY
Neuro-exercise is an emerging field within clinical exercise physiology. Many neurological conditions are lifelong, and for some diseases the evidence is strong that exercise mitigates the progression of the individual’s disease. For others the primary goal of intervention is expanding a person’s functional capacity regardless of disease state. And in other populations, depending on timeline since diagnosis, functional capacity can be improved, but the primary target of exercise is improving their risk of cardiovascular, renal, and metabolic diseases, such as heart failure, chronic kidney disease, and diabetes.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER

Josh is a certified Clinical Exercise Physiologist and Certified Inclusive Fitness Trainer by the ACSM. He has an M.S. in Clinical Exercise Physiology from Carroll University and a B.S. in Rehabilitation Psychology the University of Wisconsin – Madison.

During my master’s coursework and practicum experiences I was able to work with individuals with various neurological conditions and the chronic comorbidities that come with that. Through this experience my passion blossomed. Following this experience, I was directed by a professor to reach out to the Shirley Ryan Ability Lab Adaptive Sports and Fitness Center about potential job openings, which led me to where I am today. As part of working here, in addition to working with the existing client base, I was able to introduce the cancer population to the SRA Lab Fitness Center, leading to expanded services and new projects.
